Heyla, Misty fans!
Hope this newsletter finds you all doing well. Lots of stuff has been happening, so we’ll cut to the proverbial chase.
Appearance Alert: This is a reminder that Misty and Larry will be at CONSTELLATION XXII: PEGASUS. See the entry under “Alabama” in the Convention listing below for more details.
Mercedes Lackey Panel: The following notice was sent to us by Adept Starfeather k'Valdemar (Mary Wilson, president of the QO chapter Heartland Arrows):
"Ever since the publication of her first Valdemar novel, Mercedes (Misty) Lackey has been delighting fans with her storytelling talents. In this hour-long panel, we will discuss not only the world of Valdemar, but her extensive world-wife fan club Queen’s Own, as well as other projects (such as her collaborations with David Arkenstone) in which she has been involved.
"Back in 1992, ICON (http://www.mindbridge.org/icon/) had Mercedes Lackey as an author guest of honor. I missed that convention, much to my eternal dismay, as I was just learning about the wonderful world of Velgarth. I remained a fan, however, and now I have a chance to share that love with ICON. On Sunday, October 12, at 11 a.m., I will be presenting a panel The Many Worlds of Mercedes Lackey. Here, I hope to cover not only Velgarth, but Misty’s other works as well as some of her lesser known collaborations (such as her work with David Arkenstone). Information about the convention can be found at ICON’s website."
You can find the ICON ad under "Iowa" in the Convention listing section below.
Publication News: This October Misty joins James Mallory to bring us The Outstretched Shadow (formerly entitled Shadow Mountian). This is the first book in a brand new series that is currently called The Obsidian Trilogy. Elvenblood, with Andre Norton, will be released in paperback in October as well. (The next installment, Elvenbred, is being written.)
Exile's Valor, the sequel to Exile’s Honor, is still showing up as a November 2003 release. This will be the last major Valdemar book for several years as the series is going on hiatus while Misty concentrates on her other projects. (Exile’s Honor will be out in paperback on October 7, 2003.) Brain Ships, with Anne McCaffrey and Margaret Ball, is still on track for a November 1st release. Charmed Destinies, which contains three novellas by Misty, Rachel Lee and Catherine Asaro, will also be out November 2003.
Christmas, Hanukah, Yule, Kwanzaa, and all those other winter holidays are coming fast. Here are some shopping suggestions: Sun In Glory (A Valdemar Anthology) will hopefully be released in early December; this collection will contain the story of how Talia became a Sun Priest. If the anthology does well, there are hopes that several more such anthologies will be published while we are waiting for the next Valdemar novel. So definitely consider this book for a stocking stuffer! This Rough Magic, with Eric Flint and David Freer, is scheduled for release December 1, 2003. (The Shadow of the Lion, the first book in the series, should be out in paperback in October 2003.)
In January 2004 look for The Fairy Godmother (sometimes titled The Godmother Heir, but we think The Fairy Godmother will be the real title). This is Misty’s new offering from Harlequin. (Yes, it’s an adult romance novel, not fantasy fiction.)
In February 2004, This Scepter’d Isle, with Roberts Gellis, should be released in hardcover. A Circus Of Witches, Queen of Air and Darkness, Phoenyx And Ashes and Altan, Book Two in the same series with Joust, are also pending publication. Joust should be out in paperback in March 2004. Stoned Souls, with Josepha Sherman, has had its release date pushed back to January 2005.
You can find these and other titles through the Mercedes Lackey section of the Dragonlords’ Bookstore http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkfanml.htm. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to support QO. This is how we keep our memberships free, so we greatly appreciate your support!
QO Membership Seal: We have a winner! Hope Nickel’s design has been chosen for the QO membership seal for 2003-2004. You can view the seal at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qoseal.htm. Members of QO are granted permission to display the seal on their personal websites and personal computers. If you post the image to your website, please message Danya at Legend@malcor.com, and she will add you to the list of linking sites.
Website Woes: As many of you have become aware, we’ve been having serious website problems over the last week. What began as a rather inexplicable FTP problem expanded to the loss of all four of our mailing lists, the disruption of http://www.dragonlordsnet.com (although if you thought to use http://dragonlordsnet.com you could still access the site), the loss of access to our account, a multitude of problems with our chatroom and assorted other problems. As of the publication of this newsletter, our mailing lists are still not functioning. We do not yet know the extent of the loss of our data. Members of the QO chat list, VFC, Pending list, and Scriptorium may have to resubscribe when it becomes possible to do so again. (Danya does have a back up she can restore, but it’s a year out of date, so people who have left a list may find themselves on it again temporarily, and people who have joined since the last back up will have to resubscribe. We’re hoping we can recover the memberlists, so that won’t be necessary. This is your "heads up" about the problem, though, in case you think you are on one of our lists and you don’t hear from us in the reasonably near future.) We hope that most of the other problems are now fixed, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
RPG Postponed: Due to the aforementioned website problems, the RPG originally scheduled for 9/28 has been postponed until the issues with our website can be resolved. Danya will announce the new date via the QO chat list once that list is working again. QO RPGs are open to members only. RPGing information is available at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qorpg.htm. Contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com if you have any questions.
E-mail Woes: We are having a lot of mailing list bounces these days. If the bounce says that your mailbox is full, you will remain on our main mailing list but you will have to contact Danya at Legend@malcor.com to be sent another copy of the newsletter. If the bounce says that your account no longer exists, we will move you to our "missing" list (See below.). To reactivate your membership, simply send us a change of address. Remember to tell Danya that this change is for Queen’s Own and to include both your old and your new e-mail addresses so she can search the QO records. There are now several hundred approved personae for Queen’s Own, and it’s impossible for her to remember which persona goes with every member’s name <g>.
Halloween Costumes: Are you dressing up as a character from Velgarth or one of Misty’s other worlds for Halloween? Are you venturing out on Samhain as your QO persona? If so, we’d love to have a picture of you in costume for our newsletter! Send the .jpg or .gif file to Danya at Legend@malcor.com. Please include your name and the name of the character whom your costume represents. [Danya’s hoping to dress up in her new Golds (or whatever Misty is going to decide to call the Herald-Mage uniforms), provided its not still 90 or more degrees in Southern California by the end of October!]
Birth Announcement: Herald An’talyah (Danielle Difronzo) gave birth to Cheyenne on Friday Sept. 19, 2003 at 11:08 AM. Cheyenne weighed 8 lbs. 13 oz. and was 20 inches long. Congratulations to everyone involved! If you have any birth, wedding, graduation or other announcements, do let us know! We’d love to honor all of you and your milestones in life.
Thanks: Special thanks to Elizabeth Vines for her help compiling the information about Ren. Faires for this newsletter. Our gratitude goes out to all the people who have volunteered to proofread the QO site and otherwise assist us with running the club. We couldn’t do it without you!
Happy Halloween and Blessed Samhain!
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar

For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.37 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.
For orders shipping in the US, I've instituted a maximum shipping cost of $3.85. Multi-zine orders, which can be shipped in a flat rate envelope (usually 3 of the smaller zines, or 2 of the larger zines), will be sent Priority Mail; larger orders will be sent Media Mail Insured, which is only slightly slower and doesn't have the zone rates (which wouldn't work with my shopping cart). Smaller orders will be sent First Class.
I take credit cards via PayPal, which is the cart's only payment option, but the cart can be used to calculate shipping, and checks/money orders mailed to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Except as noted, zines are printed on high-quality, bright white paper, comb bound, with cardstock covers. Story excerpts and cover art-as well as submission guidelines and PayPal ordering information-can be found at http://www.greendragonpress.net/misty.htm. To order via snail mail, send check or money order (payable to Devin Harris; US funds only) to Green Dragon Press, c/o Devin Harris, 4531 N. Kelishan St., Pahrump, NV 89060.
Note regarding Shards of Autumn: While this zine is officially out of print and no longer available on the website, a few copies are left over from convention appearances. Any remaining copies from MediaWest will be available at that con until they sell out; the others are being returned to me and will be auctioned off at http://www.auctionfen.com until they are gone. I also occasionally auction off zines which returned from cons a bit shopworn, so it’s a good site to check periodically.
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.
You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.
If you are a returning member who has recently activated your membership in Queen’s Own and we have forgotten to list you, message Danya at Legend@malcor.com, and she’ll make sure you are greeted in the next newsletter.
One of the challenges running an online club is that people don’t always leave a forwarding address when they move

Heyla, Misty fans!
Life has been ridiculously busy around here. In addition to having my daughter start preschool and my eldest son enter first grade, my career is once again going into overdrive. I’m consulting on a major motion picture about King Arthur, coauthoring a nonfiction book about the Sword in the Stone, and staring at requests for more articles than I really know what to do with. I have a huge stack of stuff to code for the QO site, which I hope to get to eventually, but the paying jobs have to come first.
I’m looking forward to Halloween. I’m holding a joint birthday party for my three kids. Joe turned 7 on September 2nd. Kassie will turn 3 on October 27th, and John will be 2 on November 7th (He’s already practicing for the “terrible twos” <g>.). Joe is going to be Yugi for Halloween. He’s very excited about the Yu-Gi-Oh! page that I’ve designed for him at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkjuvygo.htm. You can see a picture of his birthday cake on the page in the party section. He loves dueling, and I’m amazed at the level of math he’s doing because of all the scores he has to keep track of. Kassie is planning to be Blue from Blue’s Clues. She’s quite the big girl these days, and she’s never happier than when she’s being Mama’s Helper. John will be Experiment 626. His nickname is "Stitch", partly because he always cuts two to five teeth at the same time (which made him go from gums to teeth everywhere almost overnight <G>) and partly because his destructive programming is kicking in (I told you he was practicing to be two.). Fortunately he’s also "cute and fluffy," with an amazing grin (How could it be anything else with all those teeth
I’m really excited to be back working on a book again. The Sword in the Stone material is a lot of fun to work with. C. Scott Littleton and I are tracing the legend through time and across the face of Europe. As things stand, it looks as if we will be arguing for a case of diffusion from the steppes via the Alano-Sarmatians as opposed to parallel development within Indo-European cultures. We hinted at some of this stuff in our chapter on the Sword in the Stone in From Scythia to Camelot, but we’re now taking the arguments a lot further with tons of new material to support our claims. You’ll be amazed where this story shows up, in many cases well before any of the Arthurian legends were recorded. I’ve had several requests lately for information about how to find my publications. You can locate most of them at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkmalcor.htm and on my bio page at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/author.htm.
Have a great month!
Zhai’helleva,
Danya
