We’ve heard from a number of you over the last few weeks. Our hearts go out to all who have been touched by the tragedy of September 11th. We are inspired by the stories you have told us about how you have found various ways to help. It is comforting to know that the Heraldic spirit is alive and well among the members of Queen’s Own.

We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge all of the modern-day Heralds that we’ve seen in action during the past few weeks: the firefighters and police officers who lost their lives trying to save others, the people who helped their colleagues to safety and those who stayed behind so friends and strangers would not die alone, the rescue workers and medical personnel who have worked so long and hard, helping the survivors and reaching out to the families and friends of those who did not survive . . . We have also heard stories of heroic animal companions: the guide dog who led a blind woman down and out of the building from one of the floors in the 70s, the rescue dogs who worked alongside their human counterparts . . . The tales go on and on . . .

We also ask your continued vigilance in combating the hate crimes that have occurred in some areas. Just as the Valdemarans in the Storms series needed to learn to overcome their prejudices against the Karsites after centuries of war, we modern folk of the real world need to remind ourselves and others that a few bad people do not make all members of a given ethnic group evil. We encourage you to reach out to the Middle Eastern people you know and give them a friendly word, support their businesses, and otherwise encourage them in this difficult time.

In fan club news, we are still working to reestablish our chat list. We think we’ve found a solution to this, and we hope to be contacting you about it soon.

Misty has been extremely busy publishing. Brightly Burning and The Fire Rose are out in paperback. Take a Thief, the new Valdemar novel about Skif, is due out this month in hardcover. The paperback for Beyond World’s End, the continuation of the Bedlam series, and Spirits White as Lightning (with Rosemary Edgehill) are scheduled for release in December. Shadow of the Lion is expected in March 2002, and Elvenborn is slated to appear in April 2002. Heyla, all!

Thanks to all of you who have been sending me cards and messages, wishing me well. Such thoughtfulness goes a long way toward combating the depression I sometimes feel as I continue to struggle with gestational diabetes. My baby (John) is doing well so far and is not showing any signs of birth defects. The goal at the moment is to keep me out of the hospital until he is born in November and then to make sure that he doesn’t have to spend any time in the Intensive Care Unit for newborns.

I want to take this opportunity to offer a special thanks to Moonstar for the lovely shower that she threw for me and for all the help she is providing during my pregnancy. She is truly rising above and beyond the call of duty. She’s a very special friend.

If I take a while to respond to any messages that you send me, please bear with me. I don’t have much time during the average day when I’m feeling well enough to answer letters anymore. I promise I’ll catch up eventually (though some replies may be postponed until after John is born)! I appreciate your understanding and the good thoughts and wishes that you send my way.

Oh, and a special, very loud "Huzzah!" for the new issue of Companions’ Grove, which features most of my Danya Winterborn stories. Blue Devyn (Editor Devin Harris) has done a superb job of producing the ‘zine, and Laura Cameron’s illustrations are absolutely stunning. I encourage all of you to order a copy. It’s beautiful!

The newsletter is routinely posted to the Net. If you are concerned about your address falling into unfriendly hands, don't place a fan message!
