Heyla, Misty fans!
Well, October proved to be filled with more highs and lows than either of us had counted on. While Danya was dealing with her version of a wedding (with two receptions in different states two weeks apart), two birthdays and a funeral, Moonstar lost her two cherished Danes and got engaged (Moonstar’s details are in her letter below.). At least we were able to get together for Halloween/Samhain and take our Scooby Doo, Laa-Laa and two Tiggers trick-or-treating. We are both seriously hoping for a quieter November, but life does not look as if it will be calming down for either of us any time soon. Thank you all for bearing with the endless delays in our response time and newsletter production.
Teri Lee has given us permission to reprint the following notice from Misty:
After being sworn to secrecy, I have just been permitted to release this information. One of the seminal authors of our field, Andre Norton, is gravely ill. She was admitted to the hospital last Monday for surgery, and is still there. More to the point, her spirits have sunk to a life-threatening low. She needs to know just how highly regarded she is in our community, and she needs to know now.
"We" are keeping the location of the hospital and room "secret", because she cannot have visitors and we don't want to overwhelm her with autograph-hounds when she needs to be getting stronger, not being disturbed---this is already a problem as word of her illness has percolated into the local community in Tennessee. The hospital in question will deny that she is there. Please send cards and letters to:
Andre Norton If you wish to send flowers, you may also send them to this address, but direct the florist to leave them on the porch if no one is home. Andre's two friends who are caring for her will make sure they are brought to her, but they are spending most of the time at the hospital, and so may not be there. (If this gets to be a problem, arrangements will be made for frequent pick-up!) Please do not send food, as she is on a liquids-only diet. You may send e-cards to:
Andre Norton [Ed. Note: Andre Norton is better now and has requested that no further cards be sent at this time . . . She received over 800 e-cards the day this message went out!] Again, her friends will make sure she gets to see them. Mercedes Lackey That was the straight text of Misty's message. I'm going to ask that people please take the time to respond by mail or via e-mail, this could be critical in letting Andre let her know that she is loved and cared about, something that it is very easy to loose sight of when hospitalized. How many of you guys remember which of Andre's books you first read? Take a moment and let her know just how important she has been in your life. For those with the inclination please add Andre to your prayers/meditations/thoughts. It certainly can't hurt and may help quite a bit. Please feel free to re-post this message to any appropriate list, discussion group, e-mail list or website.
Thanks, |
Teri Lee also reports that "Another book in progress is Joust, a brand new project in a brand new fantasy setting, in which two kingdoms, the desert kingdom of Tia and the marsh-land/island kingdom of Alta are at war, and the 'superweapon' of both sides is---the dragon! Vetch, a young Altan serf bound into a state worse than slavery to one Khefti-the-fat, is plucked from his miserable existence by the Jouster Ari, and taken into his service as dragon-boy to his great---and very unusual---dragon Kashet." Also, "The Map of Valdemar has been printed, and is in the process of being trimmed and shipped. We should have them in hand in a couple of weeks. Ken, our long time printer did a very nice job turning a cranky computer file into a lovely map that should please all the Valdemar fan, and gamers out there. Printed in brown ink on a parchement type paper, the new map would be a home in a Herald's pouch or in a Shin'a'in market. $15.00 plus shipping." You can find purchasing information at http://www.firebirdarts.com/indexmlackey.shtml.
In other book news, Mercedes Lackey and Rosemary Edghill’s Spirits White as Lightning will be out in paperback in May 2003.
Danya’s Herald-Mage costume has arrived, and it’s gorgeous! She hopes to have pictures taken while wearing it in the near future. The company that produced it is Anastacia's Garb & Pavilions, anastacias@anastacias.com, http://www.heartstone.de. See below for additional contact information.
A reminder: The Mercedes Lackey section of the Dragonlords Bookstore is located at
http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/bkfanml.htm
You should be able to find an up-to-date list of Misty’s publications here. If we’re missing any, do let Danya know at Legend@malcor.com. As you are doing your holiday shopping and making out your “Wish Lists”, please remember us. A portion of all purchases through this site goes to support Queen’s Own. This is how we pay for our PO box, webspace, postage, stationary, and all those other little expenses that running a club involve. Your generous support over the years has enabled to keep the memberships in QO free. Thank you so much for your support!
This month’s interview is with returning member Herald Mallea Andraya D'Lar (Jennifer Mackay).
Zhai'helleva,
Herald-Mage Adept Danya Winterborn and Healer Adept Moonstar
October 1994.
Actually Jody Lee’s cover for Magic’s Pawn grabbed my attention, and then I read the back of the book for the summary. I wanted to know why the boy on the cover looked so forlorn-like his best friend had just died.
I read a variety of other SF and Fantasy authors. I enjoy Morgan Llewellyn’s historical novels. She has written a bit of fantasy, too. I loved Ursula LeGuin’s Earthsea trilogy when I was in 7th grade. I’m waiting for Kate Elliott’s next book in her Crown of Stars series to come out. I just finished reading Mindy Klasky’s Glasswright’s Apprentice saga, or as much as she has done so far. I’m working on rereading The Lord of the Rings before Part II hits the theaters in December. I’m also diving into Rhapsody by Elizabeth Haydon, another new author.
I listen to a wide variety, but my favorite is Classical and New Age. I am a big fan of Enya, Clannad, and other Celtic artists. I had the pleasure to hear a Scotsman sing at the Scottish games and Golden Bough at Orycon a few years back.
I’ll watch stuff on the Silver Screen that I’d probably never read in book or short story form. I enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy films, Suspense/Thrillers, Mysteries, Action/Adventure films, Romance, Historical Drama (if they’re doing a period of history, I’m there!), Comedies, and a lot of stuff. (It would take up too much room to list all my favorites
Orycon 19.
I’m an unpublished writer, and it kind of comes with the territory. I wanted to socialize with people who have imagination and intelligence. I wanted to learn more about writing and have fun at the same time. Besides, I love going to watch the masquerades and listen to the filkers!
I think that the thing I like best is that the people are very open-minded and they don’t care if you’re different. Being "normal" doesn’t have a real definition (especially when I saw someone at Orycon with a propeller beanie walking the halls!). You can be whoever you want to be, dream whatever you want, and people take you at face value.
Writing on my two novels takes whatever time I have on my days off from work, after work, or whenever I can get to pen and paper or the computer.
I sometimes sit down to play a game of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction to vent frustrations after work, or delve into the many worlds of MYST. (It took me forever to crack some of the puzzles in that game!)
Spending some time with my family is also important to me, especially after my mom’s and my own divorce.
I think it would be great if we could all meet somewhere, like a giant Misty fan convention! I miss the Pacific NW Collegium’s small get-togethers for filksinging at Herald Charna’s in Washington State. That was so much fun! Herald Alora and I used to go.

For definitions of our fannish jargon, read the 12-page booklet "Pros & Cons: An Introduction to Fandom" written by Elizabeth Barrette. Send $1.00 and a $0.34 stamp (or $1.00 and 2 IRCs) to Queen's Own, P.O. Box 749, Laguna Beach, CA, 92652. Make checks payable to "Linda Malcor" in US funds only.
We have individual handouts for aspiring Heralds, Healers, Bards, Blues, Mercenaries, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, and White Winds Sorcerers/Sorceresses and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald or for a Kal'enedral if you are already a Shin'a'in. You can find these handouts online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qohandouts.htm.
You need a release form (online at http://www.dragonlordsnet.com/qomlrel2.htm) if you write a story set in Misty's worlds or using any of her characters. You do not need a release for a character sketch, poem or filk. All Misty wants to do is protect her characters and her worlds. Send the release form (you do NOT need to include the story) to Misty c/o High Flight Arts and Letters, P.O. Box 2970, Claremore, OK 74017. Do NOT include the original of the release form with your persona material; send it to Misty. Send a copy to us.
We don’t have any new approvals to announce in this newsletter, though several people are very close to having their personae approved.
All personae materials should be sent to the QO address or submitted by e-mail to Legend@malcor.com and healermoon@gmail.com.

From Healer Adept Moonstar:
The past couple of months have been very difficult for me. I have lost both of my Great Danes. My Dane Hero had numerous health problems and so her passing wasn't a great surprise. Shade, however, was abrupt. The day after I lost Hero, I found out that Shade had cancer. I tried for the last month and a half to get some weight on her, and, at the vet's recommendation, I let her go as well. I am still feeling an ache and that my house has suddenly doubled in size without sharing it with the giant dogs.
Erik was gifted with a Heeler/Pointer cross, which is keeping us very busy. She is six months old and came from a shelter in LA, where she was on the next to go list. She is very smart but has separation anxiety, which has driven us crazy at times.
Erik and I have become officially engaged with a wedding sometime in the future. We are likely to elope and tell everyone the exact date later. I am thinking either fall or next spring.
I am still taking classes and that has filled up most of my time. I am into the programming classes and all my time that is not spent sleeping or working is spent programming. I am finishing up a Visual Basic class this month, and I feel like I was thrown into the deep end of the pool headfirst.
I know I haven't been as vocal on the chat lists as anyone would like, and I am desperately trying to find time to get back online, but I can't promise it will get much better as the classes become more intense. Just know that I am trying, and I miss all of you.
Love to all--
Moonstar
