[Begin Excerpt]
Dear Misty Fans,
How did Misty come to write the Valdemar books? Fortunately for us, she has vivid dreams.
"Much as I HATE to admit it--since every bad writer in the universe comes to pros with the same 'story'--the genesis of Valdemar was in a dream. There was a short sequence of the beginning, right up to being Chosen, then the dream moved directly to the scene where Talia meets the Queen and accepts the position of Queen's Own . . .
"There was some implied knowledge there--I 'knew' something of the history of the Heralds, and was told the entirety of the Arrow Code which is used in the third book. All the rest came from asking myself why all this was happening, what the background could have been, and what this youngster would find herself doing nowt hat she was in this position. The Herald Mage books developed from a few bits of 'history'--and the fact that my editor wanted 'magic' int he first chapter of the first book,a nd there is no real magic in Talia's time, so I was forced to have Talia do what I used to do--to daydream herself into a time of legend (in my case, the England of Arthur and his knights) as she is reading a book; partially to make the book last longer, partially because she has a very active imagination, partially as escape from her dreary life. From that scrap of the last moments of Vanyel's life has come an entire set of three books--probably well over 300,000 . . .
"That would have been in 1981, just before I moved to Tulsa. I started out on a rented typewriter, but when it seemed as if I might be able to write some publishable material I mortgaged my soul for a computer . . .
"I am fortunate in having beenable to create this world--and it is a world, with a history as long and as varied as that of our own. I doubt that I'm going to run out of ideas at any time soon! The real problem is in choosing which story to tell next."--Misty
And the next Valdemar book will be--Brightly Burning, the story of Herald Lavan Firestorm. Sorry folks, you'll have to wait at least a year for this one. Coming this fall from Baen is Four and Twenty Blackbirds, a Bardic Voices book.
Mark Shepherd is a transplanted Tampa Florida native who now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Misty and Larry. He collaborated with Misty on Wheels of Fire (SERRAted Edge series) and Prison of Souls (Bard's Tale), and is the author of Elvendude. His latest book, Spiritride, is in bookstores now and has a companion album by the same name of electronic music composed and played by Mark. Both album and book are available from Firebiord Arts & Music. Look for Mark at Dragon*Con.

What does one wear to a convention? Something comfortable! This is my first time at a con where the activities are outside the hotel, and I'm leaving my costumes and my General Judeth's favorite thigh-high black boots home. Remember that you won't be able to run upstairs and quickly change between panels. Dress for comfort!
I hope everyone at the Con will make a point of saying hello and identifying him/herself. (Please don't expect me to read your name tag.) And say hello even if I look tired and crnaky. I usually look tired and cranky; years of headaches have left me with a permanent scowl.
To everyone who wishes the Guardians were real: As one of our new members pointed out, if the Guardians were real, then the reason for hteir existence must be, too, and that means there is something REALLY nasty out there. No thank you, newspaper headlines are terrifying enough.
Should you write to Highflight and tell Misty and Larry they have your understanding and support? Sure, why not? They appreciate their friends and fans and enjoy reading your letters. Because of the volume of mail they're getting, please do not expect an answer.
We have individual handout sheets for the aspiring Herald, Bard, Healer, Tayledras, Shin'a'in, White Winds Sorcerer/ess, and Mercenary, and instructions on how to work for Herald-Mage status if you are already a Herald. Send a SASE to the QO address and specify which handout you are requesting. Please, one to a customer. Club dues pay for paper and photocopying.
